October 22, 2026
Over the next five weeks, most of what happens in Streeterville is run by people who live here. A residents' association runs the Tuesday market. The MCA's back garden hosts a dog costume parade that started as a few neighbors at the tennis courts. On Navy Pier, the free programming moves indoors and gets smaller. Then on Saturday, November 21, the 35th Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival closes North Michigan Avenue from Oak Street to Wacker Drive by mid-afternoon. Six days later, Winter WonderFest opens in Festival Hall.
So the season has a clear turning point. Here's what's left on the neighborhood's own calendar, in order, and what changes once the parade arrives.
The SOAR Farmers Market sets up on the MCA Plaza every Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. It's organized by SOAR, the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents, the same group behind the neighborhood's fall clean-up and socials. SOAR's own 2026 events page gives a season of May 19 through November 3. The MCA's events calendar also lists Tuesday, November 3, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., as the final market. SOAR's market page says the season runs "through November 4," but that date is a Wednesday, and the market runs on Tuesdays.
Going by the two listings that agree, that leaves two Tuesdays after this post goes up: October 27 and November 3. SOAR's events page also mentions a possible weather-dependent extra date in November, so check SOAR's social channels before counting on anything past November 3.
The vendor list is a good shopping list for those last two mornings:
SOAR's fall calendar has already run its September Walk and Wag, a social, the Fall Streeterville Clean-Up, and a Farm to Table to Pier dinner on October 1. The next item on that calendar is Doggy Halloween on October 31.
The 39th annual Streeterville Dog Halloween Party runs Saturday, October 31, 9 to 11 a.m., in the MCA's Anne & John Kern Terrace Garden. The MCA credits Streeterville resident Rosalee Harris as a cofounder. It traces the event to a handful of neighborhood dogs meeting in costume at the tennis courts. By its 39th edition, it has a museum garden, a benefit partner, and an alderman on the judging panel.
The museum's listing says the parade starts at 9:30 a.m. Ald. Brian Hopkins is among the judges giving prizes for the best-dressed animal. Cats are officially invited too. PAWS Chicago's event page puts costume judging between 9:45 and 10:45 a.m.
What to know before you leave the building:
For the rest of October, Navy Pier's free programming runs on a smaller, indoor scale. The Slightly Spooky series shows free movies at Crystal Gardens on October 17, 24, and 31 and November 1. With the October 17 screening already past, that leaves three. On Halloween, the Pier also runs indoor trick-or-treating from 1 to 5 p.m. That makes October 31 an easy double: the dog parade at the MCA in the morning, then a ten-minute walk east to the Pier for the afternoon.
Adults have their own Halloween plans. Offshore Rooftop is hosting Halloween on the Pier on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, both starting at 8 p.m., with DJs, dancing, and cocktails.
The next morning, the Pier holds its Día de los Muertos program on Sunday, November 1. It includes activities, a market of local businesses, short films, and feature movies. The community ofrenda opens earlier, on October 24, so you can visit it on any walk out the Pier over the following week.
Once the costumes are put away, the museum shifts to a major exhibition. "Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers" opens November 7, 2026, and runs through April 25, 2027, with 70 works. MCA members get a preview on November 6, and there's an artist talk on opening day.
The run lasts more than five months, through the whole winter. For anyone a short walk from Chicago Avenue, that means you can go back on a gray Sunday in February instead of fighting the opening-weekend crowd.
Before the opening, the MCA's November 3 calendar puts the final SOAR market, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the same day as Cally Spooner's performance "Warm Up," 5 to 8 p.m. That's a full Tuesday on one block.
The Lights Festival is where the neighborhood calendar gives way to the city's. The festival's official page calls the 35th edition the largest nighttime parade in the United States. It promises Grand Marshals Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, marching bands, Santa Claus, and one million lights across more than 200 trees on The Magnificent Mile.
If you live in Streeterville, plan your Saturday around the closure schedule. The Magnificent Mile Association's festival guide lays it out for November 21:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. | Curb-lane closures on parts of Clark and Delaware; Oak Street closed from Clark to State |
| 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. | Lights Festival Lane booths at 401 N Michigan Avenue |
| As early as 3 p.m. | DuSable Bridge closes to pedestrians; Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive may close to vehicles |
| 3 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. | Closed: North Michigan Avenue from Oak Street to Wacker Drive, Oak Street from State to Michigan, Upper Wacker from Michigan to the east turnaround |
| 5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. | Upper Columbus closed from Wacker to Randolph |
| 5:30 p.m. | Parade steps off at Oak Street and Michigan Avenue, heading south |
| About 7:15 to 7:30 p.m. | Wintrust Fireworks Spectacular over the Chicago River at Michigan Avenue |
The fireworks time appears two ways on the organizer's own pages. The guide says about 7:15 p.m. and the main festival page says 7:30 p.m., so plan to be in place by 7:15.
Two lines in the guide matter most if you live east of Michigan Avenue. First, the organizers note that Michigan Avenue is less crowded on the east side, especially at the north end of the route. That's the Streeterville side, a few blocks from home instead of a trip downtown. Second, the DuSable Bridge closes to pedestrians as early as 3 p.m. If you need to get to the Loop or back that afternoon, the guide points to the Columbus Drive Bridge as the alternate. Any errand that needs a car or a rideshare across Michigan Avenue goes better before 3 p.m. or after 7:30 p.m.
The guide also encourages public transit. Most Metra lines run weekend service, and a Saturday Day Pass is $7, which helps if guests are coming in from the suburbs.
After the parade, Navy Pier's calendar shifts too. Wintrust Winter WonderFest returns to Festival Hall from November 27 through January 3. The July announcement describes an expanded holiday season with Wintrust as the new presenting sponsor. The quiet indoor movie nights at Crystal Gardens give way to a holiday event that runs into the new year.
If your routine is a lakefront run, keep an eye on the trail as well. The Chicago Park District's Lakefront Trail page says repairs are moving from south to north over several months. The work includes asphalt patching, seal-coating, new trail graphics, and some closures. No date has been posted for the stretch along Streeterville.
So the windows are short. You have two more Tuesdays at the market, one Saturday morning in the MCA garden, and three free movies at Crystal Gardens, the last on November 1.
